PhD position(s) in Computer Science,design of decentralized overlays and storage support for cloud computing, University of Neuchatel, Institut d’Informatique

. Tuesday, October 6, 2009

We invite applications for funded PhD research positions in Computer Science at the University of Neuchatel. The research topic is the design of decentralized overlays and storage support for cloud computing.

The project is funded for a 3-year duration. Applicants must have a Masters degree in Computer Science (or equivalent) and good knowledge of English. Candidates with strong programming skills who are knowledgeable in distributed systems and networking are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applications should be submitted by e-mail to Etienne Riviere (etienne.riviere@unine.ch), including:
(a) Curriculum vitae;
(b) List of 2-3 references (and their e-mail addresses);
(c) Transcripts of undergraduate and graduate studies; and
(d) Links to masters and internship thesis/reports, and possible publications.
All documents should be in pdf format.

Context

The objective of the project is to develop a simple yet easily extensible peer-to-peer infrastructure that allows for designing emerging applications and services that can take advantage of the cloud computing paradigm. The planned platform should be understood as an infrastructure and associated services for a lightweight experimental cloud. It will build upon several existing technologies, in particular the SPLAY system developed in our group (www.splay-project.org). Our research methodology favors real deployments on large-scale testbeds such as PlanetLab over simulations.

We will address several challenges in the context of this project. First, we aim at providing high-level facilities for designing distributed data structures, and mapping these structures over the physical networked cloud, hence forming on-demand overlay networks. Second, we will investigate new mechanisms for fully decentralized and scalable storage facilities for applications operating on the cloud. Finally, we will evolve the SPLAY infrastructure to support cloud-oriented applications by providing the basic services of a decentralized operating system. Depending on the skills and interests of the PhD students, one or several of these challenges may be investigated.

Location

The University of Neuchatel is settled in a beautiful landscape of lake and mountains that offers a friendly atmosphere to about 4,000 students. The city of Neuchatel belongs to the French-speaking part of Switzerland and is located at the border of the German-speaking part of the country. The university offers four academic disciplines: Humanities, Science, Theology, and Law & Economics. Courses are essentially taught in French. For more information, visit http://www.unine.ch.
